White Dental Fillings
Porcelain inlays and Tooth Colored Restorations (onlays) create fillings that are not only beautiful (and unnoticeable) but also add strength to weakened teeth. These restorations are esthetically pleasing and very strong thanks to new materials and bonding technologies.
Advantages of Tooth-Colored Restorations
There are many advantages to tooth-colored restorations. Resin onlays are bonded to the teeth creating a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth. Such restorations can be used in instances where much of the tooth structure has been lost. The tooth remains intact and stronger.
Since the resin used in tooth-colored restorations can contain fluoride this can help prevent decay. The resin wears like natural teeth and does not require placement at the gum line, which is healthier for your gums!
The result is a beautiful smile!

When do I know if I have a cavity?
A lot of times you won’t know that you have a cavity! Sometimes a tooth can hurt when you have a cavity but more often you won’t realize it as either the cavity hasn’t gotten deep enough or the tooth has built a dentin barrier between the cavity and the pulp of the tooth.
How does the dental team know that I have a cavity?
We use a combination of our clinical exam using air, an explorer and transillumination as well as digital radiographs (X-rays) to get a comprehensive view of your mouth and teeth.
Once we’ve completed our exam, we can show you the cavities, either on the digital X-rays or by taking pictures of them with our intraoral cameras. As they say, A picture paints a thousand words. It is easy to explain cavities to you when you can see what we are talking about on the screen in front of you!
What are the different treatments for cavities?
Dr. King is a conservative dentist, therefore, depending on how bad the cavity is, he will utilize different treatments. If the cavity is more of a demineralized area in the mouth, we will often prescribe a high fluoride toothpaste to try to stop or re-mineralize the weakening area. If the cavity has gotten past the point of being re-mineralized, we will recommend getting a filling to stop the decay. Our fillings are tooth colored “composite” fillings but if a patient wants another material, we have other materials available.
What is the process for getting a filling?
Dr. King will get you numb with various agents and techniques that typically result in a painless injection. Once the tooth is numb, he conservatively removes the decay with a high-speed drill and water. Once the decay is removed, we will pick the shade for the filling and isolate the area to keep everything dry. Next, we clean and prepare the tooth for the filling material. Once the tooth is ready, the white composite filling material is placed is your tooth and carefully sculpted to replicate your old tooth but without the cavity! Lastly, your filling is adjusted to ensure your bite is correct and then polished smooth.
What happens after the filling?
Typically, we will recommend that you don’t eat on that tooth or at least be careful until the numbing has worn off. Rarely, for bigger fillings, there might be some brief sensitivity but due to our filling procedure, materials, and conservative nature, this is very unusual. After that, you can eat, drink and floss just as you normally would!
