The Capabilities of Replacement Tooth Crowns

Crown and bridgework is a very reliable solution for major dental problems caused through accidents, diseases or wear and tear. Major problems can usually be corrected using these techniques. Material used in these repairs is either high-grade porcelain or porcelain bonded to gold. What is a dental crown?

The crown of the tooth is the white portion that sticks up above the gumline. When the natural crown is damaged, one option for restoring it is with a prosthetic dental crown.

When does a person need a crown?

Crowns are necessary when a tooth is cracked or broken, has become decayed beyond the point that a filling can fix, or to protect a root canal treated tooth.

What is the procedure like?

Getting a crown is very similar to having a cavity filled. The procedure takes between 1 and 2 hours and the tooth will be totally numb and pain-free. During the procedure, the tooth is reduced only by the thickness needed for the prosthetic crown. A digital impression is taken and a temporary crown is placed. After two weeks, you will return to us for your permanent crown.

Does getting a crown hurt?

No. The procedure itself is done under local anesthesia so that you won’t feel a thing. Most patients report little to no discomfort following the procedure.
